Aramid fiber.
Where the structure begins.

Understand the difference between a fiber, a paper and a finished core—and why the distinction matters when specifying a composite.

What is aramid fiber?

Aramid is short for aromatic polyamide: a family of synthetic polymers used to make high-performance fibers. The molecular structure influences how each aramid family responds to load and heat. “Aramid fiber” therefore describes a family of materials, not one universal specification.

Fibers can be converted into several forms, including yarns, fabrics and papers. A honeycomb made from resin-coated aramid paper has its own structural properties. Those properties cannot be calculated simply by substituting a fiber tensile-strength value into a panel design.

Meta-aramid and para-aramid

Meta and para refer to the arrangement of bonds around the aromatic rings in the polymer chain. The more extended para arrangement is associated with high tensile stiffness and strength; meta-aramid is widely used where heat and flame resistance are important.

Meta-aramidNomex is a well-known trade name.Fiber or paper grade, thermal requirements and the properties of the finished construction.
Para-aramidKevlar is a well-known trade name.Reinforcement form, mechanical properties, sizing or finish, and processing compatibility.

Both families appear in honeycomb products. A brand name on the raw material does not establish the mechanical values, environmental performance or qualification of a finished core.

Choose the right material form

Fiber and yarn

A yarn specification can include linear density, filament construction, finish and required test data. State the intended conversion process and resin system when discussing a reinforcement.

Woven fabric

A fabric inquiry needs the weave, areal weight, width and handling requirements. The orientation and architecture of the reinforcement matter to the finished laminate.

Aramid paper

Paper is a sheet material with different structure and processing characteristics from woven fabric. In paper-based honeycomb, the paper and resin form the cell walls.

Honeycomb core

A finished aramid honeycomb core is specified by grade, geometry, density and dimensions, together with its relevant mechanical and environmental data.

Keep material properties in context

Fiber tensile strength, paper sheet properties, core compression and panel bending stiffness describe different things. Use the property that matches the component and failure mode being assessed. Check the units, specimen definition and test method before comparing figures from different sources.

Likewise, a polymer’s thermal behavior does not establish the service temperature of a complete bonded panel. Resin, adhesive, skins, load duration and the environment can set a lower practical limit.

If your goal is a sandwich structure, begin with the aramid core design guide. If your goal is reinforcement, describe the required fiber form in your material inquiry.
